Renting a wood chipper: what it costs in autumn 2026

Renting a wood chipper costs roughly 30 to 60 euros a day at a hardware store, and often 15 to 35 euros from a private owner. These are typical ranges rather than fixed prices — but they show the order of magnitude, and why buying rarely pays off for an average garden.

Autumn is when the cutting happens: hedges come back, shrubs get thinned, the fruit tree needs attention. What is left is a pile of branches that will not fit in the green bin. A chipper turns it into mulch in a couple of hours — and mulch is useful: it goes back on the beds, keeps moisture in the soil and saves the trip to the recycling centre.

Why chippers are the textbook case for renting

A chipper runs two weekends a year. The rest of the time it sits in the garage taking up space. A usable machine costs between 400 and 1,500 euros new — at two uses a year over ten years, that is 20 to 75 euros per use before maintenance and storage.

Which machine suits which cuttings

• Petrol chipper: for large plots without mains power and thicker branches. Considerably louder and heavier — usually oversized for a normal garden.
• Check branch thickness: domestic machines typically manage 40 to 45 millimetres. Measure your thickest branch before booking.

What to check at handover

• Inspect blades or roller: blunt edges double the working time and cause the machine to jam in the cuttings.
• Check cable and plug; for petrol machines clarify fuel level and oil — agree in advance who refuels.
• Safety glasses, ear protection and sturdy gloves: chippers are loud and throw splinters. Ask whether protective equipment is included.
