A useful side effect: because demand swings so hard, many private owners are noticeably more flexible on price outside peak weeks. A scarifier in June often costs less than the same one in April.

• Ask about fuel: petrol machines often need a specific mix.
• Clarify whether extension cables or collection bags are included.
• Check the machine fits in your car — a shredder often doesn't.
