Rent a trailer from a private owner: cheap, spontaneous transport

Saturday morning, the classifieds sofa is reserved, your boot is laughably small. The DIY-store rental? Booked out or a hassle. Meanwhile, almost every street has trailers that don't move 360 days a year – and owners who would be happy about a few euros.

What does renting a trailer cost?

From a private owner you usually pay 10 to 25 euros a day depending on size. For comparison: commercial rentals often charge 30 to 60 euros for the same period, and buying your own trailer costs 500 to 1,500 euros – plus parking, inspection, insurance and tax. For two or three uses a year, that never adds up.

Before you drive: a quick checklist

  • Licence: class B covers up to 750 kg – or as long as the rig stays under 3.5 tonnes.
  • Payload: empty weight plus load must not exceed the permitted gross weight.
  • Mind the tongue weight and secure the load – don't forget straps.
  • Connect the lights and test them once: indicators, brake light, tail light.
  • Plate and valid inspection on the trailer – a quick glance, a big difference.

Frequently asked questions

Which driving licence do I need for a trailer?
With a class B licence you may tow trailers up to 750 kg gross weight – heavier ones too, as long as car and trailer together stay under 3.5 tonnes. Beyond that you need the B96 extension or class BE. A quick look at the papers before the trip settles it.
How much does renting a trailer from a private owner cost?
Depending on size, usually 10 to 25 euros per day – often much cheaper than commercial rental, where 30 to 60 euros are common. A deposit is customary on top, returned to you after the trailer comes back.
Is a rented trailer insured?
Registered trailers carry their own plate and liability insurance; while driving, third-party damage is generally covered by the towing car's liability insurance. For damage to the trailer itself you agree a deposit – on Tavaa it is held securely through the app.
How fast can I drive with a trailer?
Outside towns and on the motorway, rigs are generally limited to 80 km/h in Germany. With the 100 km/h badge you may drive 100 on motorways – it must be attached to the trailer and the rig must meet the requirements.
